Abraham’s Altars // Hardships as Spiritual Opportunities

Life is full of challenges that test our faith and patience. In the Bible, we find a powerful example in Abraham, who faced many trials and yet built altars to worship God amidst them. These altars weren’t just physical structures; they represented spiritual milestones and encounters with the Divine. Today, Abraham’s practice of building altars serves as a metaphor for how we can navigate our own spiritual journeys, even when faced with the ‘hard things’ of life.

Embracing Life’s Hardships as Spiritual Opportunities

Abraham’s life was marked by numerous challenges, yet he consistently turned these into opportunities for worship. In Genesis 12:7, we read of Abraham building an altar to the Lord, signifying his faith and trust amidst uncertainty. This act of gathering the ‘hard things’—symbolized by stones—teaches us to identify and confront the obstacles in our lives. Whether it’s unmet expectations, personal failures, or unresolved hurts, these stones can become the foundation of our spiritual growth when offered to God in worship.

Worship as a Declaration of Trust

For Abraham, each altar was a declaration of trust in God’s promises, despite not seeing them fulfilled immediately. Hebrews 11:8-10 highlights Abraham’s faith in stepping out into the unknown, driven by the assurance of things hoped for. We are called to emulate this faith by worshiping God ‘in spite of’—in spite of the prayers not yet answered, the dreams not yet realized. Worship becomes our proclamation that we trust God’s timing and plan, even when they remain hidden from us.

Places of Remembrance and Encounter

Altars served as places of divine encounter and remembrance for Abraham. Each time he built one, it marked a significant interaction with God. In our lives, we can create similar ‘altars’ by setting aside time and space to remember God’s faithfulness and seek His presence. Luke 22:19-20 reminds us of Jesus’ Last Supper, where He broke bread with His disciples, saying, “Do this in remembrance of me.” This act of breaking bread becomes a symbolic altar where we remember Christ’s sacrifice and renew our commitment to follow Him.

Practical Steps to Building Spiritual Altars

Building spiritual altars in our lives involves intentional actions that align with our faith. Here are some practical steps:

  • Create a Quiet Space: Designate a specific area in your home for prayer and reflection. Fill it with reminders of God’s promises and past faithfulness.
  • Journal Your Journey: Keep a spiritual journal to document your prayers, struggles, and breakthroughs. Reflect on how God has worked in your life.
  • Engage in Regular Communion: Whether in church or at home, partake in communion as a symbolic remembrance of Christ’s ultimate sacrifice and victory.
  • Practice Gratitude: Regularly list the things you are grateful for, even during challenging times. This practice can transform your perspective and reinforce your trust in God’s goodness.

Reflect on these questions: What ‘stones’ in your life can you turn into spiritual altars? How can you trust God more deeply in your current season?
